Equator – Do You Weigh less?

Growing up I always wondered why water when draining down a drain always spins the same direction?.. Our visit to the Equator solved this question.

When Erin and I first scheduled our trip to Uganda we didn’t realize that it was located right on the Equator.

Small Local Town

We had never been to the Equator before, so of course we had to stop when we saw signage saying we were at the Equator. We happened to go through a small town located right on the Equator while on our way to visit the Mountain Gorillas in the south western part of Uganda.

During our short visit we ended up learning a few things that we didn’t expect. The best way to learn anything is to always speak with the locals. We found a small retail store and they were more than happy to tell us all about the Equator.

3 Things We Learned at the Equator

1. Standing on the Equator you weigh less than anywhere in the world.

If you want to awake your inter-nerd you can read all about the why behind this here.

The simple fact is you weigh about 1% less on the equator vs. the North or South Poles.

2. We paid a small fee and had one of the locals show us how water flows on each side of the Equator as well as right on it. Watch the videos to find out if it makes a difference which side of the Equator you are on.

3. Water flow changes within 20 ft of the Equator.

I thought it would be cool just to stand in both hemispheres at the same time.

This quick stop was 100% worth it.  To watch the Full Water Spin Test you can watch it here.
